Stephen A, Smith and Marcus Spears’ Fiery Debate on Patrick Mahomes-Lebron James Analogy Leaves the Internet on Fire

Patrick Mahomes has always been a self-sufficient athlete. He doesn’t require special weapons or wingmen to empower his abilities. This notion was perfectly justified in the 2022 season when the quarterback lifted the Lombardi without having Tyreek Hill or a bunch of other trustworthy men in his side. While not many experts would doubt the statements made above, there was a time when a few football lovers used to suggest that Mahomes looked like a great QB because he had an unbeatable team. Debating on the same lines, things got a bit heated between Stephen A. Smith and Marcus Spears on First Take a while ago.

The duo just crashed the internet by shouting on one another on live television. While Spears ranted at Smith, the veteran gave it back with absurd LeBron James-Patrick Mahomes analogy, also dragging other NBA stars through the dirt. And of course, it did hurt the sentiments of several fans of both the leagues who couldn’t help but listen to the back-and-forth between these two analysts.

Marcus Spears and Stephen A Smith compared Mahomes to this NBA superstar

Back in 2020, on ESPN’s First Take, Smith and Marcus Spears went absolutely ballistic while talking about Mahomes. Spears accused his counterpart of claiming that Patrick had a ton of weapons to help him win the title in 2020. Not pleased by this take, Spears stated that Stephen A’s take is like saying that LeBron won the championship in 2020 as he had Matthew Dellavedova and Tristan Thompson on his team.

According to Smith, Marcus degraded players like Travis Kelce and Tyreek Hill with his comments. However, Marcus suggested that his point was that players like Mahomes make everyone else in the team look a little bit better.

The gist of the debate was that Marcus wanted Stephen A. to give more credit to Patrick Mahomes for leading his team to a championship title. Whereas Stephen kept on trying to suggest that Mahomes, who is undoubtedly a great QB, won as he had probably the best players in his unit.

Things went a bit out of hands when the LeBron analogy was brought in. While Stephen kept on suggesting that Matthew Dellavedova and Tristan Thompson should not be compared to the likes of Travis Kelce and Tyreek Hill, Marcus accused Stephen of not appreciating Mahomes for his achievements. This prompted Stephen to yell, “no, you’re lying to the American public,” suggesting that Marcus was deliberately misinterpreting his take. Things went on like this for a while with no conclusion coming out of the fiery debate.

Does Patrick Mahomes require talented players to win championships?

A successful NFL team demands coordination and an extreme amount of hard work from each and every player on the squad. No matter whether it is Patrick Mahomes or Tom Brady, skilled athletes are required at every position to help a side win championships. However, one has to admit that quarterbacks like Mahomes fall in a different category. Although Patrick also requires support, but he is someone who has won several games while being injured and with inexperienced players in the unit.

Last season, Patrick didn’t have Tyreek Hill or players like JuJu Smith-Schuster to help him out. However, he was able to utilize his remaining assets to build a formidable side. HE eventually ended up taking the Kansas City army to the Super Bowl.

Similarly, in the upcoming season, he won’t have Mecile Hardman and Schuster from the squad to aid him, but that won’t probably make a huge difference. Coach Reid and Mahomes will figure out backups to fill the loopholes.
