Leon Edwards Jorge Masvidal

Jorge Masvidal and Leon Edwards have had different career trajectories since the pair’s backstage brawl that occurred following UFC London in 2019. In 2019, UFC London was capped off with Jorge Masvidal pulling off an upset when he picked up a substantial victory against homegrown talent, Darren Till. In what would eventually be labeled his comeback year in the sport, Masvidal had a phenomenal display knocking out Till stiff in the second round. Current UFC Welterweight champion Leon Edwards ironically was slotted into the co-main event against Gunnar Nelson.

Needless to say, Edwards pinpointed and outperformed Nelson to a unanimous decision victory. As both victors were speaking to the media backstage in light of their triumph, an incident brewed between the pair, which eventually resulted in hands being thrown.

Masvidal struck Edwards in the face with his patented ‘Three pieces and soda’, leaving the Brit bleeding. Fast forward three years, oh how the tides have turned.

Masvidal’s former opponent Stephen Thompson, who recently emerged victorious against Kevin Holland, stirred controversy when his statement was misinterpreted regarding the Welterweight championship and Jorge Masvidal.

Stephen Thompson has left MMA Twitter riling!

Thompson recently made an appearance on the YouTube channel ‘Fred talks fighting’ and caused a stir when he made an intriguing statement that was misinterpreted.

Thompson stated-

“Kamaru Usman is having hand surgery, I know they want to fight somebody in March, and they’re looking at Jorge Masvidal.”

The words stated by Thompson left the martial arts community displeased, who ensured they didn’t hide their feelings about the proposed matchup.

‘Wonderboy’ however, was quick to clarify his statement reiterating that his statements weren’t actually confirming the booking of the fight, but merely his speculations.

Thompson commented-

“My friends, my bad! I meant to say I wouldn’t be surprised if they made the Leon vs Masvidal fight I have no idea what the UFC is planning to do. As of now it’s still Leon vs Usman. #MyBad #Oops”

Well, thanks for clearing that up, Wonderboy! You had us all there for a second!

Is Jorge Masvidal slated for yet another title fight?

For someone who last accumulated a victory in 2019, Masvidal has seen his name in the mix for a title shot far too often this year. Considering his history with the newly crowned king, Masvidal has been actively campaigning for a title fight against Edwards.

Gamebred is well aware that he is in the twilight years of his career and has had two unsuccessful attempts at the UFC Welterweight championship against Kamaru Usman. The Cuban-American is well aware that in an ideal world, he would not be presented with the opportunity again.

As such he has been in pursuit of a championship opportunity against familiar foe Leon Edwards. Edwards understands that he currently holds all the cards. However, he is on the hunt for redemption as well and has promised Masvidal a title shot.

Provided he can amass a couple of victories against the top dogs of the division. As of now, martial arts supporters have nothing to be concerned about as the bout will not come to fruition.
