Tony Ferguson Accepts Michael Chandler's Challenge; Wants to 'Close out 2020 in style'

Tony Ferguson wants to compete again in 2020, and apparently wants to face Michael Chandler in December.

Ever since he has entered the UFC circuit, Michael Chandler has been promulgating for a fight with Tony Ferguson. The two Lightweights were even proposed the spot of the Co-main event of UFC 254, but the contest could not materialize. However, Chandler stood firm with the desire to see Ferguson as his debut opponent in the biggest MMA promotion, and as it turns out, his callings have finally come to fruition, as El Cucuy has challenged the former Bellator Lightweight champion via an Instagram post.

Ferguson last stepped inside the Octagon in May, where he suffered a major setback at the hands of Justin Gaethje. His loss at UFC 249 not only dethroned him from the Interim spot, but also his long pursued title fight against Khabib Nurmagomedov also ended in spoils. Since then, he showed interest in sharing the ring space alongside Dustin Poirier, but that mutually agreed bout fell through in the later stages of negotiation.

Though, with that it is potentially the end of Tony time in 2020, but according to a new development Tony Ferguson wants another fight before the year closes out.

Tony Ferguson Accepts Michael Chandler’s Challenge

After noting the update regarding the Conor McGregor Vs. Dustin Poirier fight, Michael Chandler immediately asked for a response from Tony Ferguson, and thus Tony has responded. The fighter seemingly wants to face Chandler in December.

So, with Tony on board and Chandler being ready from the outset, there’s apparently a verbal agreement here, if not, might take that form soon, however, it is up to the authority to make the escalations and make Tony Ferguson Vs. Michael Chandler official.

Is Any Slot Available In December?

Tony Ferguson plans to “close out 2020 in style” and has mentioned December for an ostensible return. But is any slot available in December?

Considering the stature of the fight, UFC might want to place the fight on the card of a pay-per-view event (Assumption), and if indeed the matchmakers ponder over the scheduled UFC 256’s date, December 12, then a possibility might emerge.

Amanda Nunes Vs. Megan Anderson was targeted to be the initial main event of UFC 256, but on account of Nunes’ withdrawal, the spot is empty as of now. However, the pre-concluder fight between Aljamain Sterling and Petr Yan for the Bantamweight title, might get the elevation to become the headliner, which could pave the way for Tony Ferguson Vs. Michael Chandler to feature at the PPV (Probable case).

So, let’s see what ultimately pans out, as more updates about the concerned fight are expected.
