Lovie Smith offered a final gift to the Chicago Bears before the Houston Texans fired him
Lovie Smith and the Houston Texans had an abysmal season, but it was all going to be worth it when they got the number one overall pick, right?
Unfortunately, things didn’t work out that way. The Texans were in the driver’s seat for the number one overall pick till the last week of the regular season.
They were 2-13-1 coming into the game while the Chicago Bears were second worst with a record of 3-13. That meant that a Texans loss guaranteed them the first overall pick.
A Texans win would open the door to the Chicago Bears gaining the first overall pick. A Houston win and a Bears loss meant that Chicago would hold the first overall pick.
The Bears faced off against the Vikings, and the Texans matched up with the Colts. Both teams faced opposition teams better than them, but the Bears were definitely far more mismatched against the Vikings than the Texans were against the Colts.
In the end, Houston pulled off a miracle to win their game against Indy, with a crazy 4th and 20 touchdown and a 2 point conversion.

NFL fans react to Lovie Smith ‘gifting’ Chicago one last time
If you’ve been a fan of the Chicago Bears for some time, then you’ll know that their most successful recent coach was former Texans coach Lovie Smith.
The Bears made the playoffs several times under Smith’s tenure, something that has eluded recent Bears coaches, and they made it to the Super Bowl in 2006 under Smith’s guidance.
Chicago hasn’t had as successful a coach as Lovie Smith since they moved on from him. Marc Trestman, John Fox, and Matt Nagy have all come and gone without a trace of the same success Smith had.
After the Texans win gifted the Chicago Bears the first overall pick, fans were quick to get on to social media to make fun of the entire situation.

Lovie Smith was unfortunately fired from the Houston Texans, and now the franchise still has a long way to go before they can contend for the playoffs again.
