There are reports that Former Indian opening batsman, Gautam Gambhir is set to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and might contest the upcoming general elections from Delhi.

The Aam Aadmi Party is currently the ruling party in Delhi and BJP would be looking to come back to power in the national capital. Gambhir has been in BJP’s priority list and according to reports from, Dainik Jagaran, BJP is likely to persuade him to contest in the next general elections from Delhi.

Gambhir would be following the likes of former Indian cricketers like Mohammed Azharuddin and Navjot Singh Sidhu who are also parts of Indian politics. Apart from Indian cricketers, reputed Sri Lankan cricketers like Sanath Jayasuriya and Arjuna Ranatunga have also played a significant roles in their nation’s politics.

In BJP’s quest to regain power in Delhi, someone like Gautam Gambhir, who has a good reputation amongst the people, will bring in a huge fan base and help the party’s chances in winning the elections. In the past, Gambhir has contributed to many social causes including several donations to the army.

The batsman from Delhi last played for India in a Test match in 2016. He hasn’t been a part of the limited overs format since 2012. He played a monumental role in India’s ODI World Cup win in 2011 and his contributions in the 2007 T20I World Cup victory were also vital.

The southpaw from Delhi has played a total of 58 Tests and 147 ODIs for India, aggregating 9392 runs in his career. He also captained Kolkata Knight Riders to two Indian Premier League (IPL) titles before returning to Delhi Daredevils in the last season. However, he didn’t have a good season with Delhi Daredevils and stepped down as the captain after some initial failures.
