“Michael Jordan or LeBron James?”: While Choosing Between Peyton Manning & Drew Brees, Tony Gonzalez Once Took a Cheeky Dig at His Fellow Panelist
Every now and then, analysts and fans engage in discussions about who is the best quarterback in the NFL ,or which one signal caller would they pick out of two greats. Back in 2019, some of the most respected analyst questioned each other as to who they thought was the strongest quarterback between Drew Brees and Peyton Manning and what ensued was absolute box office.
Jason Whitlock, Tony Gonzalez, Reggie Bush and LaVar Arrington sat down to discuss if Brees could surpass Peyton Manning by winning another Super Bowl during an episode of SPEAK For Yourself. The discourse then shifted to if Brees was better than quarterback than ‘The Sheriff’. For Tony Gonzalez, the Hall of Fame tight end, the question was so confusing that he ended up dragging Michael, LeBron James and even Beyonce into the debate.
Ton Gonzalez ultimately chose Manning over Brees
When posed the Brees vs Manning question, Gonzalez chose Peyton as his best quarterback because he is known for revolutionizing the position by bringing in the ‘Omaha’ call and being ahead of his time. Additionally, he was the most adaptable quarterback of his time. He went to four Super Bowls under four different coaches. This should give an idea as to how flexible the QB was.
However, it was difficult for the former Kansas City Chiefs tight end to choose between highly dextrous quarterback. He then took a shot at Whitlock who was being too cheeky and blamed him for forcing him to answer a tough question.
He said, “You always do this type of stuff. Hot dogs or hamburgers? Ferrari or Lamborghini? Beyonce or Whitney Houston? Michael Jordan or LeBron? I’ll take them both!”

While it was indeed a “who is better, LeBron or Jordan,” type of question for which the 47-year-old even took a dig at Whitlock, eventually, we all got to know whom he liked more between Manning and Brees.
Gonzalez congratulated Brees on breaking Peyton’s record
Although the former Falcon TE’s choice was Manning, he had congratulated Drew Brees when he surpassed Peyton Manning and became the NFL’s career passing yardage leader. Drew threw a 62-yard touchdown pass to rookie Tre’Quan Smith, which gave the Saints a 20 point lead during a 43-19 victory over the Washington Redskins back in October, 2018. Even Manning couldn’t stop himself from showering praise at Brees.
Congrats @drewbrees! It’s been incredible to watch. They better start talking about you when they say best of all time. I know I am. 👍🏽

Congratulations, @drewbrees!
Peyton Manning's really happy you broke his record.
Well … kind of. 🤣 https://t.co/aUxXIDFzI8

Congratulations to Drew Brees on the all time passing record. Always a class act.

In front of a nationwide audience and the enthusiastic crowd at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, Brees had accomplished this outstanding feat which even attracted praise from former US President Barack Obama. As far as the current scenario is concerned, while Brees’ broadcasting career has been kind of a topsy turvy one, Manning on the other hand has established himself as one of the finest Sportscasters in the business.
