‘He’s Taking Dak Prescott’s Job’: Newly Acquired Cowboys QB Joe Milton Turns Heads by Casually Slinging an 85-Yard Bomb
The Dallas Cowboys have just made an intriguing move by acquiring quarterback Joe Milton from the New England Patriots in a trade. While the former sixth-round pick never made a significant impact on the field in Foxborough, the Tennessee alum had turned heads at last year’s Combine, effortlessly launching multiple 70+ yard passes and clocking a blistering 62 mph throw.
Pair Milton’s elite arm strength with his raw athleticism, and the Cowboys may have finally landed a hidden gem this offseason. Possibly at the cost of incumbent QB1, Dak Prescott, or so the fans feel.
The supporters of Jerry Jones’ squad are buzzing, with some even digging up Milton’s highlight-reel moments from the past. In one such clip from 2023, the 6’5″, 235-pounder casually flicks his wrist and sends the pigskin nearly the entire length of the field — 85 yards, to be precise. It’s the kind of pass that makes you stop and wonder: is that even humanly possible?
Even though the throw happened long before Joe Milton joined the Cowboys — or even the Patriots — its resurfacing has only added to the excitement surrounding his arrival in Jerry’s World.

“This just made my day fr finally someone god gifted talent in the QB room,” wrote a Cowboys fan on X, while another chimed in, “I’m glad that we traded him. He seems like a really talented quarterback, and I want him to have a shot at a starting position.”
But interestingly, the majority of the Cowboys fanbase saw the 85-yard dime and Joe Milton’s signing as a warning shot to Prescott.
“He boutta take Dak’s job,” remarked one netizen, while another added, “As much as I love Dak, he better get his you know what together.”

Amid the wave of excitement and optimism, some Dallas supporters expressed their reservations about the signing. They called Milton a great athlete but a poor playmaker. Some even labeled his arm strength overrated.
“Raw talent and physical tools,” one fan wrote. “Baker threw it 70 yards with shoulder pads on. It’s cool, but a lot of QBs can do this,” another bluntly penned.
Indeed, an old practice throw doesn’t mean Milton is ready to take over. The 25-year-old just played one game for the Patriots last season. However, just like during the Combine in Indianapolis, his raw talent was undeniable in the Week 18 game against the Buffalo Bills.
Drake Maye started that game for New England before Milton was called in. He helped the Patriots to a 23-16 victory, completing 22 of his 29 passing attempts for 241 yards and a touchdown. He also had 10 carries for 16 yards and a touchdown on the ground.
Milton began his collegiate career in Michigan, where he was a backup option from 2018 to 2020. In the 2020 season, he started five of the Wolverines’ six games before entering the transfer portal and landing in Tennessee.
He started all 12 games for the Volunteers in the 2023 season, ending with an 8-4 record. Milton completed 64.5% of his passes for 2,769 yards and 26 combined touchdowns, five interceptions, and an additional 292 rushing yards.
For now, Milton will sit behind Prescott. But with Prescott’s injury concerns and growing doubts about his efficiency, Super Bowl-hungry Cowboys fans will want Milton to get his share of starts. And they’ll hope he makes them count.
