Aiyuk’s Instagram Post Points to Washington

Brandon Aiyuk

Brandon Aiyuk posted an Instagram story video featuring a graphic that reads he’ll “be a Commander soon.” It was the latest in a series of public displays pointing toward the Washington Commanders as his preferred destination.

However, nothing has actually changed. Aiyuk remains on the 49ers’ reserve/left squad list, and no trade has been reported. NBC Sports’ Mike Florio noted there is no indication Aiyuk has even petitioned the league office for reinstatement. The post is a statement of intent, not confirmation of a deal.

The Instagram story, posted on July 2, shows Aiyuk dancing behind a graphic that reads “be a Commander soon.” There is no accompanying text, no named destination, and no specifics about timing or mechanism. This is the latest in what Florio described as Aiyuk’s ongoing public campaign to align himself with the Commanders.

Reality of Aiyuk’s Situation

Before any move can happen, one of two things must occur. Either the San Francisco 49ers release Aiyuk from the reserve/left squad list, or Aiyuk petitions the league office for reinstatement. If reinstated, he would be required to report to training camp, at which point the 49ers would almost certainly terminate his contract. Per Florio’s reporting, a season-ending injury sustained while Aiyuk is on 49ers property could leave San Francisco on the hook for more than $26 million in 2026 compensation.

Washington has been consistently floated as the most likely landing spot for Aiyuk, largely because the Commanders are willing to wait for a release. Aiyuk’s public posturing suggests the two sides have at least had conversations, though no formal agreement is possible until he clears San Francisco’s roster.
