Mitchell Robinson Questionable for NBA Finals Game 1 Following Off-Court Hand Injury

Mitchell Robinson is listed as questionable for Game 1 of the NBA Finals – and the New York Knicks aren’t offering much more than that. The 7-foot center underwent surgery last week to address a fractured fifth metacarpal bone in his right hand, an injury that, notably, did not happen on a court.

According to ESPN‘s Shams Charania, Robinson hurt himself at his own home during the off-week between the conference finals and the Finals – and despite that, remains “resolute” in his desire to suit up Wednesday night at Frost Bank Center.

What the Knicks Are (and Aren’t) Saying

Head coach Mike Brown was careful not to commit either way on Robinson’s availability. “He did some individual stuff [Monday],” Brown said. “I’m about to talk to our medical people to see what he can do [Tuesday].”

Robinson was present at NBA Finals media day on Tuesday and participated in light shooting and dribbling drills while wearing a black wrap over his shooting hand and right wrist. Charania reported he would likely wear a sizeable brace on the hand if cleared to play – but as of Tuesday, Robinson had not been authorized for full-contact work, and he was not made available to reporters. The team has not explained the circumstances of the injury beyond confirming it didn’t happen during an organized team activity.

Why Robinson’s Availability Changes the Equation

Robinson is a bench piece by the numbers – averaging 5.3 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 14.2 minutes per game through 13 of the Knicks’ 14 playoff games – but his value doesn’t live in the box score. He’s New York’s primary rim protector and lob threat off the bench, the kind of player whose presence reshapes how opponents attack the paint.

That matters especially against the San Antonio Spurs, where Victor Wembanyama presents a different kind of interior challenge than anything the Knicks saw earlier in the postseason. Robinson already has a reference point there: in December’s NBA Cup championship, he posted 4 points, 15 rebounds, and 2 blocks in 18 minutes against Wembanyama and San Antonio – the kind of performance that made him a key piece of New York’s Finals preparation. The Knicks’ reaching the Finals was built on a playoff run that leaned heavily on interior toughness, and Robinson has been central to that identity.

Game 1 Outlook With Questions Still Open

If Robinson can’t go, New York will need to piece together its frontcourt depth – a challenge for a team already running a tight rotation this postseason. The Knicks dominated Game 1s earlier in these playoffs, but those performances came with Robinson available and healthy enough to contribute.

The final injury designation and pregame availability will be the next real update – and how Robinson looks in actual contact situations will tell more than any questionable tag. Playing through a broken hand with a brace, against Wembanyama, on the Finals stage, is a significant ask. Whether the Knicks ask it of him at all is still very much undecided.
