How Many Challenges In NFL? How Many Challenges Does Each NFL Team Get?

The NFL playoffs are here, and we’ve had some exciting action already. The games continue as the Bills are taking on the Dolphins in an AFC East rematch.

Josh Allen and the Bills are on a mission this year. They know they’ve been Super Bowl contenders for the last few years, but they have been unable to make it over the hump.

Specifically, they haven’t been able to get past the Chiefs. In 2020-21, Buffalo made it all the way to the AFC Championship Game where they lost 38-24 to Kansas City.

The next year, it seemed like Buffalo would get its revenge on Kansas City in the divisional round. They took a 3-point lead on Kansas City with just 13 seconds left, but Mahomes magic sent the game to overtime. There, Josh Allen never got the ball back, and the Chiefs promptly marched down the field to win the game.

Now, they should have an easy time facing a Dolphins team without Tua Tagovailoa in the Wild Card round.

How many challenges does each NFL team get?

The NFL challenge rules are a little bit complicated, so we can break it down easily. Firstly, an NFL team starts every game with 2 available challenges in their hand.

They can use those challenges whenever they want with certain conditions applied. Challenges are dependent on teams having a timeout remaining.

This is because if a team loses a challenge, they not only lose the challenge but they also forfeit a timeout. Additionally, a team cannot challenge a play when there are two minutes left in each half. In this time period, challenges are triggered by the replay official.

A team can also get a third challenge if they are successful on their first two challenges. In the Bills-Dolphins game, Buffalo challenged a ruling on the field that stated that Gabe Davis didn’t catch a pass. However, the challenge was successful, and the ruling was overturned.

The Bills currently lead 17-0 with about 12 minutes left in the 2nd quarter.
