Rohit Sharma on MS Dhoni's absence

Rohit Sharma on MS Dhoni’s absence: India’s stand-in captain has said that the team invariably misses the former captain.

The sight of former India captain and current wicket-keeper batsman Mahendra Singh Dhoni not playing for India in the recently concluded T20I series had allured plentiful criticism when the team was announced.

With India winning the series 3-0, the number of remarks appeared to drop down, something which speaks highly about the fickle nature of the audiences.

After several speculations regarding the reasons behind dropping Dhoni, people came to the conclusion that it was chiefly done to accommodate Dinesh Karthik and Rishabh Pant in the playing eleven for one of them is still likely to make the cut of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019.

Moreover, with Dhoni not in contention for ICC World Twenty20 2020, it was a wise decision to try others in his place.

Speaking during a press conference after whitewashing the Windies, stand-in captain Rohit Sharma was asked about whether the team felt Dhoni’s absence. Answering in the affirmative, Sharma declared Dhoni not being part of an Indian side as a ‘big miss’.

“MS (Dhoni) was not part of the Nidahas Trophy in Sri Lanka also. MS not being in any team is a big miss. His presence in the team itself is a huge boost for a lot of the players, not just me, especially the younger players,” Sharma was quoted as saying during the press conference.

With Dhoni not part of the T20I squad now, his next international assignment will be the ODI leg of India’s tour of Australia in January. Post which, Dhoni will travel to New Zealand to play another ODI series. Before the ICC World Cup 2019, India will play an ODI series against the Australia at home. In between the series against Australia and the World Cup, Dhoni will be seen taking part in the 12th edition of the IPL (Indian Premier League).
