Were The Raiders Using “Illegal Kickoff Tactics” This Season? Latest NFL Memo Sparks Heated Discussion

The Las Vegas Raiders made a few major changes to their roster this year. They roped in star wide receiver Davante Adams and were expecting the team to really take off this season.

However, it would be fair to say that the team’s performances haven’t nearly been as good as they would have wanted. After 13 games, they now have a 5-8 win-loss record and things aren’t going to get any better for them this season.

To add insult to injury, the Raiders were unable to contain Baker Mayfield in their last clash which they ended up losing by a solitary point. Without 48 hours of joining the Rams, Baker, the same quarterback who was being regarded as one the worst performers of the season, was able to get through the Raiders.

Raiders can’t use their special kickoff tactic anymore

To make matters even worse, the NFL recently issued a memo suggesting that the Raiders, from now onwards, can’t use the special kickoff tactic anymore which they have been using all season long this year.

Reportedly, the Raiders were using a holder on kickoffs while also using a tee and they have been asked by the league not to use the same tactic anymore. Shedding some more light on the issue, Pat McAfee had a few things to say on the recent episode of the “Pat McAfee Show.”

While using a tee, normally the ball has to be an inch off the ground, the Raiders were putting it right on the back of the tee so if somebody come hold it so that the ball is another three and a half quarter inches higher,” Pat said on the show.

From one inch to one and a half or 1.75 inches, that is a vastly different change,” Pat stated, adding that he was impressed with the Raiders for figuring out this smart move and at the same time, he was p*ssed at himself for not figuring it out when he used to kick the ball.

Turns out, the move was illegal after all, or at least it is illegal from now on. Fan reaction on this is divided with many questioning the NFL’s timing of sharing the memo, while others expressing delight over the decision.

As far as Pat is concerned, he had a moment of silence for “the ingenuity that came from Las Vegas.”
