Big E recalls what the WWE did differently during Kofi Kingston’s run as WWE Champion

Big E recalls what the WWE did differently during Kofi Kingston’s run as WWE Champion. Kofimania ran wild back in 2019.

The WWE title scene, heading into Wrestlemania is usually very clearly defined by the end of the Royal Rumble. Back in 2019 however, there seemed to be no credible challenger to Daniel Bryan’s WWE Championship. At least until Kofi Kingston emerged as the crowd favorite to dethrone the champion of the planet.

Kingston captured the imagination of the fans and booked his ticket to Wrestlemania where he became the WWE Champion for the first time in his career. WWE Intercontinental Champion reflected on that run during his appearance on Renee Paquette’s Oral Sessions podcast.

Big E praised Kofi for being humble during the storyline and trying to include the rest of the New Day despite all eyes on him.

“What I really respected, was that Kofi, there’s so many times we could have just made it about himself, and he was still always trying to include the three of us” Big E said. “And that I really appreciate you know? Because it was it was his moment. Honestly, and we were fortunate enough to be along for the ride.”

He then spoke about how he loved the Tag Team Gauntlet match that sealed Kofi’s WWE Championship challenge because that was different from what the WWE usually did with their factions.

“I’m glad we got to do the storyline of the Tag Team Gauntlet match” Big E continued. “The reaction to that was really cool too. Because in wrestling it’s always about like which faction member is going to screw the other; and it was cool because we (WWE) never do like real moments of like brotherhood and sacrificing for the other, so that was cool.”

Like most combat sports enthusiasts, his passion for watching people fight began with WWE when he witnessed a young Brock Lesnar massacre Hulk Hogan back in 2002. This very passion soon branched out to boxing and mixed martial arts. Over the years he fell in love with the theatrics that preceded the bell and the poetic carnage that followed after. Each bruise a story to tell, each wound a song of struggle, his greatest desire is to be there to witness it all. His favorite wrestler is Shawn Michaels and he believes that GSP is the greatest to ever step foot inside the octagon. Apart from wrestling, he is also fond of poetry and music.
