WWE Extreme Rules 2020 Results and Analysis

Let us take a look at the WWE Horror Show at Extreme Rules 2020 results and the analysis of the matches that took place at the event.

A total of 8 matches took place at the WWE Horror Show at Extreme Rules. 7 of them took place on the main show while one match was added to the kick-off show 2 hours before the show via an announcement on their twitter handle.

The event as a whole was a brilliant exhibition of story telling and in ring action. However, for all the hits, there were also some misses along the way. Let us now take a look at the WWE Extreme Rules 2020 results and analysis of the matches.

Kevin Owens vs Murphy – Kick Off Show

The only match on the kick-off show was the recent inclusion to the card. Owens vs Murphy, despite being predictable in its result was still a fantastic affair to set the tone for the rest of the night. Murphy continues to prove match after match how amazing he is between the ropes. Owens on the other hand, was as good as he always is.

The highlight of the match was Owens’ picture perfect Moonsault. He would eventually pick up the win with a stunner.  With a little more build up, this could have easily been the match of the night.

Result: Kevin Owens wins

The New Day © vs Artist Collective (Shinsuke Nakamura and Cesaro)- WWE SmackDown Tag Team Championship (Table Match)

The first match on the main show picked up from where Owens and Murphy left off. The intensity remained the same from the beginning until the end of the match. Laced with numerous high spots, all performers played their role to perfection.

The New Day © vs Artist Collective is what happens when good wrestlers are given the opportunity and time to showcase what they’re capable of. Even if it wasn’t as good as the match on the kick-off, it is safe to assume that we will see this match once again. With a better storyline, this match can be everything the fans expect it to be.

Result: The Artist Collective defeat The New Day to become the New SmackDown Tag Team Champions

Bayley © vs Nikki Cross – WWE SmackDown Women’s Championship

The build of this match may have been set aside to focus on Asuka vs Sasha Banks. However, on the day that it mattered, both performers told a brilliant story inside the squared circle with nothing but their body language.

Bayley did not consider Cross a threat even once before the match, while the challenger doubted her ability to win the title. Once the bell rung however, Cross’ resiliency surprised Bayley who grew increasingly frustrated with her inability to get the job done.

As the match ran longer than she expected it to, Bayley grew more concerned and worried. However, a Sasha Banks interference allowed Bayley to stun her challenger using Banks’ Boss knuckles.  A face plant later, Bayley retained her title.

Result: Bayley defeats Nikki Cross to retain her SmackDown Tag team title

Apollo Crews © vs MVP – United States Championship

The match was called off with announcer Tom Philips announcing that the champion was unable to pass his pre-match physical and was therefore unable to defend his title. MVP picked up the new United States title and declared himself the new champion and left.

Result- Match called off

Rey Mysterio vs Seth Rollins (Eye for an Eye Match)

A first in the WWE, the winner of this match would be the competitor who managed to gouge his opponent’s eye. The stipulation however handicapped the match. In a match where the target should be your opponent’s eye, both wrestlers continued fighting with their normal move set for the majority of the match.

They would eventually get there. However, a different stipulation could have elevated the match. Regardless, it was still a very enjoyable fight with several high points. The match ended with Rollins using the steel steps to gouge Mysterio’s eyes out.

Result- Seth Rollins won

Asuka © vs Sasha Banks – WWE RAW Women’s Championship

The best pure wrestling match of the night, Asuka and Sasha Banks stole the show with their performance. The other two women on the ring side, Kairi Sane and Bayley also added a whole new dimension to the match.

Perhaps a little too much dimension though. The match could have easily been a contender for match of the year but was brought a couple of notches down due to it’s poor finish that saw Bayley don the referee shirt and count the three pin to declare Banks the new Raw Women’s Champion.

Result: Sasha Banks beats Asuka to become the new WWE Raw Women’s Champion

Drew McIntyre © vs Dolph Ziggler – WWE Championship Match (Extreme Rules for Dolph Ziggler Only and Also No Champion’s Advantage)

Ziggler revealed a very unique stipulation for their match which allowed Ziggler to fight under Extreme Rules but forbade McIntyre himself from doing so. McIntyre’s Champion’s advantage was also taken away which meant that he would lose the WWE Championship if he were to be disqualified.

The build up to this match was McIntyre overpowering Ziggler all along the way. On this night however, it was the Champion who had to sell his opponent’s move and he did so brilliantly. The WWE Champion retained his title with a claymore kick after an intelligent and hardfought battle.

Result: Drew McIntyre beats Dolph Ziggler to retain the WWE Title

Bray Wyatt vs Braun Strowman © – Non-Title match (Wyatt Swamp Fight)

There is a reason Asuka vs Sasha Banks was called the best wrestling match of the night, because the best performance of the night goes to the encounter between Bray Wyatt and his one time disciple Braun Strowman at the very place where it all began.

This match was everything it promised to be, taking the Universal champion to his personal hell. Alexa Bliss was even thrown in the mix for the brilliant call back to the time the duo paired up as a mixed tag team.

The match, if you can even call it that, ended with the Fiend finally emerging and pulling Strawman inside the swamp. The show closed with the laughter of both Wyatt and Fiend echoing through the swamp with Strowman nowhere in sight.

Result: Bray Wyatt, I guess?

Overall, WWE Extreme Rules 2020 was yet another brilliant show. The WWE have consistently put on amazing Pay Per Views since the Pandemic and the Horror Show at Extreme Rules was no different. There are still a few holes to fill. However, the company has made the most of a bad situation and continues to put their best foot forward, at least when it comes to the Pay per Views.
